Sir Frederick Treves and sympathetic ophthalmia.

چکیده
S ir Frederick Treves (1853-1923) is best known as the doctor and protector of the Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick (1862-1890) (Figure 1). Broadway plays, a movie, and several books have described Treves’ relationship with this horribly deformed man who is now considered to have had Proteus syndrome rather than the earlier hypothetical diagnosis of neurofibromatosis. Proteus syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by patchy, irregular overgrowth of multiple tissues. Partial gigantism of the hands and feet, hemihypertrophy, pigmented nevi, soft tissue tumors, and macrocephaly are some of its features. Typical ocular findings are strabismus, amblyopia, epibulbar lesions, high myopia, and heterochromia iridis. Treves reported that the Elephant Man’s eyes, orbits, and cranial nerves were normal.

متن کاملEarly Recovery of Sympathetic Ophthalmia with Hearing Loss in a Young Man
Hearing loss is rarely associated with sympathetic ophthalmia. We describe a young man who presented with sympathetic ophthalmia and concurrent hearing loss one month post globe rupture. The presentation was very subtle and atypical. However, the patient recovered fully after two weeks of prompt oral corticosteroid therapy which resulted in good visual and hearing outcomes. This patient demonst...

متن کامل[Optical coherence tomography aspects of sympathetic ophthalmia: case report].
The sympathetic ophthalmia is a granulomatous panuveitis that starts after ocular trauma. The prognosis is poor and depends of both early diagnosis and treatment. The authors describe one case of a patient with sympathetic ophthalmia using optical coherence tomography who was submitted to early treatment, and it suggests that the optical coherence tomography can corroborate as a ancillary metho...
